India is full of exotic fruits that you might have missed out. When you go to a supermarket or see a fruit vendor, you come across apples, mangoes, bananas and oranges. But apart from these, there is a long list of Indian fruits that you should never miss.

The second-largest producer of fruits in the world is India.  India has climatic diversity ranging from extreme cold in Ladakh to hot in Rajasthan. This supports the growth and production of all kinds of delectable fruits in India.

Let us have a look at the top 10 Indian fruits that you should never miss:

1. Fingered Citron

Fingered Citron is also known as Buddha’s hand. It looks like a lemon with long, yellow tentacles that resemble human fingers. The interesting part is that it has no juice or pulp. It has a very nice aroma. It is grown in North-eastern India.

2. Wood Apple

Wood apples have a woody surface and have a sticky pulp inside. The taste of wood apple can be bitter, sweet or sour. Wood apple or bael ka sharbat is a perfect drink. Add water, sugar and lemon juice to the pulp of wood apple. Your refreshing bael ka sharbat is ready to quench your thirst. Other uses of this fruit include chutney or a substitute for tamarind in food.  

3. Star Fruit

Star Fruit, also known as Carambola is a rare fruit. It is a golden yellow. India produces carambolas in large quantities. It tastes the best when it is ripe.  The unripe ones are lime green and are sour. It is rich in nutrition. The main advantage is that star fruit helps control blood glucose levels.

4. Karonda

It is a wild pink-coloured berry having small seeds. It tastes sour in a raw state. As it ripens with time, the taste gets sweeter. Using this berry, one can add a flavour to jams and spicy pickles. It is a rich source of iron and Vitamin C. Karondas grow in places with high temperature.

5. Blueberries

Blueberries are sweet and nutritious Indian fruit that you should never miss. It has a bluish-purple colour. They are rich in antioxidants. You can put blueberries into everything you bake.

6. Grapefruit

Grapefruit is a citrus fruit. It grows in groups like grapes, and hence the name. Its flavour ranges from sweet to sour. You can consume it as a fruit, juice or as a pulp.

7. Kiwi

Kiwi is a little fruit packed with sweetness and tanginess. It is full of Vitamin C, Vitamin K and potassium. Thus, it boosts the immune system also. Their small black seeds, as well as the brown outer cover, is edible. You can use kiwis to make healthy jams or smoothies.

8. Rambutan

It is a combination of strawberry from outside and lychee from inside. This oval-shaped fruit is sweet with a little bit of sourness. Blend it with coconut water, banana and strawberry to make a delicious smoothie.

9. Persimmon

Persimmon is a golden yellow and round-shaped fruit. It grows well in regions that have moderate winters and mild summers. Examples of such areas include Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Persimmon is a good source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

10. Ambarella

Ambarella is also known as wild mango. It is oval in shape and green in colour. It possesses a sour taste. It has flavours of both pineapple and mango. Enjoy in any form like juice, pickle or as a flavouring in fruit cocktails.
